About us

Compas is made up of distinct committees that together will work towards the same mission.

Education External Committee: The Education External Committee is responsible for delivering and teaching an English language curriculum for our student farmworkers. They will be tracking the progress of the ESL students and the effectiveness of the curriculum. This committee is also responsible for leading group or individual classes, creating and revising homework, and adapting the curriculum as it becomes necessary. In addition, this committee is responsible for distributing Rosetta Stone accounts and tracking the progress of learners and their accounts.

Education Internal Committee: The Education Internal Committee is the driving force behind our general meetings. They will give insightful presentations during our general meetings based on researched topics regarding the farmworker community. Such topics will include labor policies, disparities stemming from inequities in the farmworker community, how to support farmworkers, and more. They will also be responsible for gathering information about health, health disparities, and current events. This committee will be heading our project and gathering data to be presented during Undergraduate Research Week.

This committee aims to fill the gap in knowledge that exists in the UCLA community (and beyond) regarding the issues that afflict farmworker communities.

Finance Committee: The Finance Committee will be in charge of looking for and applying for funding, and for the budgeting and allocation of funds. They will be the committee behind major fundraisers and responsible for attending all hearings relating to grants as well as ordering supplies.

Youth Empowerment Committee: The Youth Empowerment Committee will be responsible for managing the Semillas College Mentorship Program as mentors to high school students. The program is open to 10-12th grade high school students and begins in late September. The Semillas mentors will lead weekly mentorship sessions in a hybrid format and provide guidance to students in the Oxnard Union High School District by exploring topics relating to academics, pursuing higher education, personal empowerment, and more. The program also includes planning a Winter field trip, Spring UCLA trip, and a Mentee Scholarship. Semillas is based in Oxnard due to the large presence and rich history of farmworkers.

Social Media Committee: Will manage our website and all social media. Will work with all other committees for the creation of flyers, posters, pamphlets, Instagram posts, etc. relating to Compas events, farmworkers facts or personal stories among other things. In todays world of technology, the Social Media Committee will be the main force behind spreading our message online and to the rest of the UCLA student body.

Advocacy Committee: The Advocacy Committee will research legislation and policies affecting farmworkers and their communities. We will use this research to lobby government officials at various levels of government. The committee will be participating in various lobbying meetings/events and will reach out to relevant community organizations, agencies, and elected officials. As a new committee, how we advocate will adapt and change depending on the needs of farmworkers, the communities we hear from, and student input.

Internal Relations CommitteeThe Internal Relations Committee creates the vibrant energy of the organization. They will be responsible for creating socials each quarter in order to allow all committee members to engage with one another. They will also manage the recruitment of potential committee members, retention of present committee members, and track attendance of committee members.
